Hierarchies in Tabular SSAS 2012

  • I created a tabular model of Adventure Works DW 2012. I created a Date Hierarchy in dimDate for Calendar Year -- Calendar Qtr -- English Month Name. When I do this in multi-dimensional SSAS, I know how to go in and establish the relationship so that the months are related to the correct quarter and year, etc... How do you do this in Tabular, though? I don't see advanced options for creating attribute relationships, sort order, etc... Once I build this model and explore it with PowerPivot, the month names are ordered alphabetically rather than numerically, etc.. ? Do I have to create a calculated column or something? I know I could use the MonthNumberOfYear instead, but is there a way to sort by that without displaying it in the hierarchy? Can anyone help me out?

  • I think I figured it out. In order to make your reports sort by the # of the month rather than alphabetically (so January comes before February), click on the English month name (BEFORE you create your hierarchy). In the properties pane, change “Sort By Column” to MonthNumberofYear.
