Eleven Challenges in Unifying Reference Data

  • great article. I liked the story it told. I imagine anyone who has been through it before recognized a lot of the issues you mentioned. Anyone who hasn't done it already should view it as a roadmap with carefully labeled potholes/pitfalls.

I wonder if anyone else read this title in their email subject as "Elven challenges..."? I was initially expecting Middle-Earth DBA building a single grand lookup table. 🙂

I to am being pestered to take the kids to see The Hobbit!

I suspect that, if pushed, the development community would describe DBAs as data orcs;-)

  • Thank you for sharing such a detailed and well-explained solution.

Quick question: At the time did you evaluate SQL Server Master Data Services (MDS) as an option for your Reference Data requirements and have you subsequently looked at the possibilities around Reference Data in SQL Server's Data Quality Services (DQS)?

  • I've been to a few presentations on DQS and to be honest it looks like a version 1.0 product. It seems to be a question of shifting your data to the service which given the size of the data would be impractical. The last two SQL Bits sessions on DQS looked interesting but didn't give me a light-bulb moment.

I haven't had the chance to look at Master Data Services yet but it is on my radar.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
