2013 is on the way. Warm greetings to all of you first.
I am posting the questions here to collect and share ideas, thoughts and wishes among the database professionals. People here wear different hats (DBA/developer/architect/etc) and work on the different platforms (SQL/Oracle/Sybase/etc) from all over the places. It would be nice to see how the others are doing in their fields to open each other’s minds.
Here is the simple question to start with:
Does your workplace have any new projects?
Do you have any specific areas would like to work on?
Of course this includes but not limited to SQL.

Personally I really want to start working on some certifications, though I say this every year and it never happens :-/ Maybe this year since I've pretty much put getting my Bachelors on the perpetual back burner.
Professionally I hope this is the year I'll finally be able to develop a Data Warehouse. I absolutely love the BI changes to SQL 2012, but given the changes in licensing it'll be hard to persuade the powers that be that it's worth investing in.

In 2013 I will be exploring the new BI capabilities in SQL Server and Office 2013 (so basically the tabular model and PowerView).
I hope to get my MCSE certification on BI (already have the MCSA).
I also will try to write some articles. We'll see how that goes 😀

BI/Data warehousing is always on my wish list. There are so many new technologies coming out these days. It is hard to know all of them. Nevertheless, we still need to keep an eye on what is happening out of our own cubicles.

I've started working with Hadoop. I'm going to keep going with that and expand into more Azure SQL Databases.

Finally teach myself some basics on SSAS. It's the one piece of SQL Server I've never actually worked with, so it's about time for me to at least shake hands and introduce myself to it.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. There are so many things come up, Hadoop, SQL2012, cloud. Even within SQL Server itself whatever version we are working on, there are still features, interesting areas to dive in. We really need to make a sound balance between the old and the new, the comfortable zone and the unknown territory, and work and life, of course.
I started to work on Oracle two years ago and I had to force myself to give up SSC. It was very hard for me because there were so many interesting questions, discussions, and articles here, especially Steve’s editorials. I made it anyway for a bitter but better cause.
I still remember the people in this community who are willing to help each other, share ideas and the good/bad moods. It would be interesting to see how the others are doing and move the career forward. We can always learn from each other.

We have a new client coming on line next year with a potentially, really high volume SQL 2008 database in which I anticipate many, many performance issues. I think there will be plenty of performance consulting and DBA opportunities for me there.
I also plan to write a few more articles, although at this time I am a bit sketchy on the topics. I've had like 3 on the back burner for some time, so there is potential to get those up and running.
I also have some SQL work planned for another client in Papua New Guinea that should prove interesting if small. Travel there is a real pain but it is quite likely that several trips there will materialize in the first 4 months of 2013.
Certifications? Jeez, I'd love too but not even sure where to begin.
Edit: Almost forgot. Plan to get TOAD up and running soon so I can start posting solutions that will work in either SQL Server or Oracle. Code portability don't 'cha know. That should keep Mr. CELKO happy!
My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?
My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.
