Blocking application using policy management?

  • We are starting to dabble with policy management where I work, and I was wondering if anyone would know if there is a way to block a particular application from accessing the database server?

I know you can restrict access based on login, but I was wondering if there is a way to prevent office applications from connecting. I know that I could put in a trigger to do this, but I was thinking that policy management should be the way to go.

We started going through the facets to try to find application name, but haven't stumbled upon it yet.

    Thanks!!!

  • I'm not sure if you can do this via policy managment. IMO access to a database should be a part of a well thought out security configuration, and I don't think that fully falls under policy managment, but I guess it's a grey area.

Ideally though only application service accounts and a select few users (if any) should have access to the database server. This way the majority of users don't have direct access and your problem of users connecting to the database by other applications becomes moot.
