The Cloud is good for your career

  • I ran across a piece that surveyed some salaries and it shows that people working with cloud platforms are commanding higher salaries, even when the underlying technologies are the same. It seems crazy, but that's the world we live in. Perceptions drive a lot of things in the world, especially the ones that don't seem to make sense.

Assuming we take salary polls from Dice.com at face value, can this be explained by the assertion that IT departments can afford to pay their developers and BI staff higher salaries, once they eliminate a redundant DBA and the infrastructure guy. 🙂

Maybe, wouldn't be the first time I have seen stuff like this done.:-D

  • I'm shocked that there's not more discussion about this one.

One reason that the pay may be higher for folks with (I started to say, their head in the clouds) jobs working in the cloud is that it is cutting edge. But what about tomorrow? Will that still be true 5 or 10 years from now? I doubt it. The spike may be temporary.

  • I think the spike is temporary, and as I mentioned, it's about perceptions. Right now the cloud gets a lot of press, which means to managers, it seems "hot", so they're willing to pay more. Even if they don't get more.
