Buffer Manager\Reserved Pages

  • Hi there,

Could anyone out there explain to me what this performance counter tells me please? I can't find much out there...

    Buffer Manager\Reserved pages

"Number of buffer pool reserved pages."

    Some context around my question:

We are seeing buffer cache hit ratio fall at exactly the same time as reserved pages grows to consistently around 100,000. We currently have 12GB assigned to SQL server, all of which is being used. When this reservation takes place it is signifigantly degrading performance presumably because it is causing ~100,000 pages to be stolen from db objects that were cached.

The output of DBCC MEMORYSTATUS shows a similar number under Buffer Counts - External Reservation

Are these two related? How can I narrow in on the root cause?
