Suggestion: Let author of thread flag thread as "solved", along with post within thread as "solution"

  • Hi all,

Simple suggestion, though one which I'm not sure is possible under the current forum structure.

It would be very neat if there were to be a way for the author of a thread to indicate that their problem was solved, and have that indication be visible from the main forum menu. This would allow people who are looking to aid others, to look at the threads which do not have a solution already posted, or, alternatively, for people who are looking for solutions, to glance at the threads which are already marked as solved.

Also, would be nice to have the solution post within the thread be markable by the author as well.

These are suggestions in the same vein that the social.msdn.microsoft.com forums have going.

  • We've talked about this, but the main issue is the person asking the question is the least qualified to say if something is the answer. Often a suggestion is made that might work, or appear to solve the problem, but often doesn't.

We may add a "this worked" flag of some sort, or other voting mechanism.

  • As always, the problem with these "this post was the solution" features is that the next post, or one twenty posts later, may very be a better solution, or may point out a horrible flaw in the accepted solution, but most people will read "the solution" post, accept it as "right", and not benefit from further discussion on the subject.

I see a lot of that in forums all over the place.

  • I'm in favour of this change, but I'd advocate just a simple toggle for the OP to mark his problem solved.

And an Icon in the topics view to show the state of the toggle.

But not marking a particular post as the solution, if the OP wants to add another post saying which suggestion he used, thats up to him.
