There is both sadness and happiness. Sadness for the loss of life and for their friends and families. The happiness comes with the realization that some have given their lives to serve others; that I am free to do pretty much what I want because some cared enough for their nation that they put their lives on the line. Memorial Day is about remembering those who have died while serving in the military. It doesn't necessarily mean they died in war.
