Steve, Now you are the Sql person of the year (read it somewhere yesterday), congratulations btw!

I have a question. regarding the CU updates. I'm good with sql but certainly not a DBA'er or expert (Software developer working with sql and doing the dba task on our production boxes).

    Ms recommendations:

This cumulative update package may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by any of these problems, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2008 R2 service pack that contains the hotfixes in this cumulative update package.

I'm not aware that we have problems on our instances, but we do use some of the mentioned features which are on the fix list. I hate to find a bug and find out they patched it 5 months ago in a CU.

What would be your advice? Patch a R2 with CU5? Did you in the last year have any problems which appeared after installing a CU? My gut feeling is that MS patching on SQL is quit ok and there has not been any big problems. But I dont maintain that many databases to have no sufficient build up knowledge on it.

    Thanks in advance!
