2008R2 Developer versus Standard Editions--how to convert

  • I've got a situation where an employee accidentally installed the developer edition of SQL Server 2005. We discovered this when we went to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2. The only upgrade path he could find was 2005 developer to 2008 R2 developer. We have a license for standard; we just don't know how to convert it. Can anyone help? Is our only option to un-install/re-install? My concern is that we are running the db side of Sharepoint on that box and I'm not certain if just re-attaching those db's to the newly installed instance will work or not. Thoughts? Help?

  • This may or may not work. Typically, each edition adds something to the DB that cannot be used by a lower edition. MS says they are required by the additional functionality, but I can't confidently vouch for that.

If you try and attach the DB to 2008 R2 Standard and it says you can't, then I would script out the DB and table schemas including PKs, IDXs, etc. The use the Export/Import Wizard to tranfer the data between versions.

There may be a better way to do this, but this is how I have done it since 7.0.

Maybe someone else has an easier idea.
