Adding a detail row when none exist

  • I initially thought I would not need detail rows in my VS 2008 BIDS report, and deleted them while keeping the group I needed. Now I realize that I do in fact need a detail row. However, no matter how many right clicks I do, I can't find one that will allow me to insert a detail row. I guess I could start over, but I have done so much work, and it would be nice to know for the future.

To recap, I deleted all my detail rows, and now that I need one, I can't find how to add one in again.

    Help???? :w00t:

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

check the attached image for your reference.

  • I m also expiriencing the same problem(inserting Details on VSS2008 BI) it seems as it has limited properties.and Also grouping are not user friendly like previous virsions

  • Thank you for your answer, however, in VS 2008 there is no layout tab. Only design and preview.

I would assume that the add detail row is somewhere, but I just can't find it.

    Thanks again for your reply.

  • Select any of the rows in the table, right click and then click on the detail rows option.

Select any of the rows in the table, right click and then click on the detail rows option.

Ok, I did that, and there is no detail rows option in the list.

  • can you not just use the undo button, to take you back a step(s)?

Like I said, I realized I needed the detail row later in the development. Besides, I had saved the project many times, and exited VS a few times since I deleted the detail row.

    But, thank you for answering.

  • In the design screen, on your table click at the table head or group to highlight that row, right click and details will be in the second section and slightly greyed out. Just click it and your details row will be restored.

  • Right clicking after selecting the top row gives me the following choices :

    Insert Row

    Delete Rows

    ------------

    Add Group

    Row Group

    Row Visibility

    ------------

    Tablix Properties

    Nothing regarding detail rows.

  • Ahh! I see said the blind man!!!

You don't have a table with groups -- you have a matrix. Details are not a part of matrix and never have been. It's like a pivot table.

I'm afraid you will have to create a table with groups in order to get details. A matrix is by definition only going to show aggregated data.

  • Was going to ask you whether you were looking at a table or matrix, but was afraid to ask due to fear of sounding silly :hehe:

  • I created a table, not a matrix, with one group, and inside, a detail row.

I began to add group rows, and at some point, thinking I would not need the detail row, which I just kept pushing around, I deleted it. Did this cause the table to turn into a matrix?????

  • I'm pretty sure in ssrs 2008 the table object and the tablix object are exactly the same. To create a simple table in 2008 is more cumbersome they have taken a step back from 2005.

I suppose they wanted to tied everything together.

  • No, Tablix took the place of Matrix and is an aggregation tool.

From Applied Microsoft Reporting Services 2008 by Teo Lachev "Tablix lets you author versatile table-style reports with multiple row groups and column groups. Tablix brings in features that were either not supported or difficult to implement in previous releases."

"In previous releases, the Report Designer would display a green triangle in the right top corner of a total

field in a cross-tab (matrix) report. Many developers, including myself, were frustrated because cross-tab totals supported minimal customization through the InScope function and were limited to the Sum aggregation function only. With the Tablix data region these limitations simply disappear."

Tablix is a powerful tool, but displaying detail data is not one of it's functions.

What you CAN do is create a report with the detail information in it, and link that to one of the group fields in the tablix so that when it's clicked, the group acts as a parameter and the detail report opens displaying the detail for that group selection.
