Restore with point in time

  • Dear all,

I have a database db1 as simple recovery model, i have a backup(bak) for that month of 2010-06-22, but i want to restore the database up to 2010-05-01

Please tell me how can i perform this operations

  • If you want to restore to the 1st May, you need a backup from the 1st May. Since the DB is in simple, you need a backup from the date that you want to recover from.

  • If we have full recovery model , can we do that? and how?

  • Then you need a full backup from before the 1 May, and log backups up to the point that you want to recover from.

You can never restore to a point before the full backup that you're using was taken.

WHat she mean is that you cant restore/revert a database back to a past time without at least a full backup (.bak file) from that date or a backup from before that date and log backups taken after the backup and upto the required point in time?

Is that clearer? Think of it like this, if you have a calendar, you cant go back to see what you were doing in May if you have thrown away every page older then a week ago.

What part of my replies are unclear?

If you want to restore to 1 May, you need a backup that was taken before 1 May. There's no way to go back in time, to restore to a point before a backup was taken.

  • I understood everything ,Sorry for my bad English,

Actually we are taking the backups weekly once, after two weeks we will delete the old backup files,

But still our one of DB guy asking up to last month database that's a way am asking , is its possible to give the database up to last month..

    FYI,

    1)Full backup

    2)DB is full Recovery

Only if you have a backup from BEFORE the date that he wants. If he wants a database from 3 weeks ago and you delete backups older than 2 weeks, then I assume you do not have a backup 3 weeks old. If that's the case, you cannot give him what he wants.

    FYI

    1)Full backup

    2)DB is full Recovery

Totally irrelevant. Same answer applies regardless of recovery model
