  • how do i implement sql double take?

  • I am sorry, but that question simply cannot be answered straight forward here, as I have no idea what setup you are running, what connectivity type is used, how many server etc....

You will have to do some research on this one, as it is crucial to do the implementation according to the book.

I assume you purchased the software with licenses ? best would be to get your sales rep to bring a technical person to the table and plan your installation and maintenance.

    This isnt a 20min procedure.

  • I'd go start with the Double Take documentation and ask them initial questions.

  • Here is a nice resource for your questions

  • If you have someone in your organisation who already knows how to use DoubleTake for non-database files, then ask them about setup and configuration. There may be some site standards you should follow.

You can then do some research to find out about the differences that relate to database files with DoubleTake.

Finally, I strongly recommend you start using DoubleTake with a sandbox test environment where you can try various configurations and see what works and what breaks SQL Server. You need to try various fail-over scenarios so you gain confidence in using the product.

If you do all the above, it is likely you will need about 3 months between the time you start learning about DoubleTake to the time it is safe to put this on to a production DB server. If you need to get into production sooner then the best option is to get some expert consultancy help on-site to show you what to do.

At my old place they used DoubleTake to replicate SQL DBs between two GB data centres, using an active/passive failover concept. This worked well for a number of years until a major infrastructure upgrade that moved to GB and US data centres with SAN replication.

  • Double-Take Software http://www.doubletake.com is a real-time asychronous replication product that will allow you to replicate the application, data and or the full system state to another (same OS version) and failover or restore with little to no downtime. You can check out the usergroup http://usergroup.doubletake.com/main/summary and there are over 700 Double-Take users there that can help point you in the right direction. Also, Double-Take Software does offer a remote install service (cheap if I recall) and they will help you install over the phone.

and of course there is always Technical Support..

  • I had a bad experience of Double Take some years back where I was asked to sort out a mess created by a systems guy (I'm a DBA) who had installed Double Take against a couple of SQLs intending to create a failover set-up. In fairness to the product I'm not sure Double Take was ever configured correctly but this is what I found: (a) Double Take corrupted several SQL databases (b) data was lost at failover time. I limited the effects of (a) by ensuring DT was only ever configured to handle the one application database it was intended for, and by ensuring the application database was only online to one SQL at a time. However when we did stress testing and failover we found that not all the data made it to the DR site, perhaps because of network latency.

Anyway my exposure to DT was brief and some years back so might not be relevant. All I would say is understand how the product works and thoroughly test that it delivers what you expect. I found it configured badly and it became a source of problems itself.

  • I'll second the warning that if D-T is not configured correctly it can be a cause of problems. But I will also say that when it is configured correctly it works very well with SQL Server.
