I'm new to SQL2005 64-bit (and to the W2K3 64-bit O/S too). I'm trying something new!
Does the 32-bit & 64-bit versions of SQL2005 come on the same CD?
When a W2K3 64-bit O/S Server is built and I begin the SQL2005 installation, does SQL DETECT that my O/S is 64-bit and install the 64-bit version of SQL2005, or do I run a different 64-bit version installer?

I am not sure about retail but the SQL Server 2005 I used from employer's network drive and MSDN are separate builds while the SQL Server 2008 comes in AnyCPU which means the file is huge, the SQL Server 2005 is only 1gig while the SQL Server 2008 is 3gig plus. So check if it says x86_x64_ia64 then it is AnyCPU.

There's no detection I'm aware of. I haven't used real media in years. Always downloaded, and looked x86 or x64 in the file name. Since a x86 will install on 64 bit machines, you want to be careful. My guess is that you want to find the x64 setup files.

Hi Steve, I looked through my SQL2K5 software and found no setup executables with x64. I did find a few filenames with x64 on them like: sqlncli_x64.msi and SqlWriter_x64.msi and SqlServer2005_BC_x64.msi

My answer was based on your questions there is no difference when installing SQL Server 2005 either x86 or x64, in 2005 the only thing to look for is make sure all your web use for IIS6 to be x64 or you have to run IIS 6 in x86 mode because you cannot run IIS6 in both x86 and x64 modes. If you are not running SSRS it is simple install if you are running SSRS make sure you add IIS6 and click on details to enable features needed to run Asp.net because SQL Server 2005 installer will disable SSRS if IIS is not running.

That link comes with all platforms including Itanium 64 so you could buy the x64 1 processor license the price is very good make sure it is valid license before your buy.

No - you don't have to buy separate software. The license you purchased is good for either x86 or x64. I am not sure about IA-64...
If you have valid licenses for SQL Server 2005 - but don't have x64 version, you can contact Microsoft to get the x64 version.

Pardon for resurrecting an old post, maybe it would be better to start a new thread, but anyway...
Based on my same observation that the CD's I have contain x64 versions of some of the executables, I assumed the Install would do some kind of OS detection. However in practice after the install is complete, I find I'm running an "Intel x86" version of SQL on my 64-bit Windows server 🙁
For now I'm just turning on AWE and moving on, but is the correct answer "You need to get the x64 CD's from Microsoft"? (or download the x64 zip).

Yes, a new thread would have been better...
The installation DVDs contain both x86 and x64 versions. If you downloaded an iso from MSDN, then depending on version, you may have had the choice of one or the other, if there wasn't a choice, then the iso would contain both.
The installation DVDs do check the OS, if you prefer to install the other option (x86 on an x64), it's in the last tab on the first installation screen
