SQL Cluster 2008 dll error caused a failover scenario

  • We recently put into production a SQL 2008 / Win 2008 Cluster environment. We've a few fail over scenarios one of which indicated a DLL issue:

Cluster resource 'FileServer-("clustername")(Cluster Disk 3)' (resource type '', DLL 'clusres.dll') either crashed or deadlocked. The Resource Hosting Subsystem (RHS) process will now attempt to terminate, and the resource will be marked to run in a separate monitor.

This file server failure put the SQL service in a pending state because the ldf and mdf files are located on the clustered storage resource (on a SAN). The only way we were able to recover was to fail over to the other node in the cluster. So far we've come up short with a great deal of information on this dll and how it could deadlock or fail.

  • Kindly click on all the Resources created in SQL Server Group i.e. SQL Network Name, IP Address, DISK, SQL Server & SQL Server Agent and click on properties.

Go to advanced policies and check the checkbox in the bottom i.e. Run this resource in Separate Resource Monitor.

  • I got a similar error on my environment, but in my case I don´t have installed the SP1 on my Windows 2008 Server.

In one of the KB´s of SP1 they fix the error of cluster.dll
