We have set up a new "ask" site based on the StackOverflow codebase at http://ask.sqlservercentral.com.
Please feel free to ask/answer questions there. Right now this is a hosted system and I do not know how we will get points / score/ reputation sync'd up, but if you keep your username the same at the ask site, we will determine some way to do this. We might also move to an OpenID system here at some point.

Hi Steve,
had a good hard look at the site, seen it used elsewhere and I dont like it. for the following reasons.
No real sense of community, which is one of the reason I am on SSC
Seen too many examples where bad answers have been accepted/voted and correct answers ignored.
I can see it distracting from the forums and causing issues long term, personally i think it is a step in the wrong direction and would have perferred if anything the forums having a makeover.
I am sure that others will rave about it or say it is a learning curve and it will get better, but for me I have no interest in the site and I will not be using it.

I agree the format is 'wierd'. I also think that in a manner of speaking that it is redundant. As for me SSC will be the only SQL site I use - simplicity !

getting people to use the ASK site for purely deterministic and therefore presumably simpler questions seems a good way to go although how you get people to do that I don't know. Maybe refer them back to SSC if its an open ended question? Trouble is you will spend a lot of time doing that.
linking your Ask reputation to your SSC points sounds good if you want to encourage posters here to also post at ask, and maybe also feed back points gained at ask (for replies) into SSC? Probably I am asking too much there.
Perhaps selfishly I will continue to concentrate on SSC so at least I get the immediate feedback of accumulating points for the time I give to it, unless all the 'low lying fruit' migrates to ASK, then I might have to. 🙂 Perhaps that is an intention to clean up some of the white noise of repeating simple questions from SSC?
The big advantage of SSC is that it is much more of a 'debating' format and therefore a better source for in-depth learning.
So please don't take your eye of the SSC ball, but if you need a sister site to combat the threat of StackOverflow then that is a business decision.

I think personally and most probably selfishly, I would be a bit miffed, if points accumulated on the ask site, added to your SSC score, you would be penalising anymore who spends dedicated time on SSC helping people. I am not on SSC 24/7 but I try and help as much as I can. If the other site is going to be a success/failure, let it do it on its own merits without trying to gain support by linking it to the main SSC forums.

good point. Its all getting a bit complicated but maybe there should only be a relationship between your ASK and SSC standings if you have a certain number of POSTS (not points) on SSC.
Personally I would be bit miffed if I had to start as a complete newbie at ASK seeing as it is related to SSC, and would struggle with the concept of people scoring my posts, let alone editing them!

I dont really agree with that :-P, To me they are two completely separate sites and should be treated differently, if someone wants to spend their time on ASK, building up their profile and points fair enough, but dont link them. considering how the scoring on ASK is totally different to SSC, it would make the points scheme on SSC pointless, no pun intended :-).
I have stayed away from ASK completely for the reasons specified in my previous post. My time is precious and SSC is the only forum that I post on and the only one that I try and help people on.
ASK has its own uses and should be viewed and used in the context for which it was intended.
