SQL 2000 Analysis Services cubes with SQL Server 2005 databases

  • Hi,

We are planning to migrate few of our SQL Server 2000 databases to SQL server 2005.

These databases also have some Analysis Services cubes, which we do not plan to migrate as of now.

Are there compatability or any other known issues with running SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services cubes with SQL Server 2005 databases.

    Thanks

    Hema

  • You should be fine since you are just moving the data and keeping the SSAS database 'as-is'. The real benefit would be to move the SSAS database to 2005 since there were major improvements made with the UDM, BIDS, design, MDX, memory, etc.

I would test the connectivity to see if you might need to install an updated client on the server which you could download from the SQL Server 2005 Feature Pack if needed.

Here is a good posting on SSAS upgrade to 2005:

Steps to a Seamless Migration of SSAS 2000 to 2005 Database

Just remember that SQL 2000 is no longer supported. You can utilize the Upgrade Advisor which is part of the Feature Pack also to do some preliminary analysis of your 2000 components to prep for the migration. SP1 for SQL Server 2008 has been released now also, so you might want to look at the potential to skip directly to 2008 also.

Here is a great reference guide in regards to upgrading:

SQL Server 2008 Upgrade Technical Reference Guide - This 490-page document covers the essential phases and steps to upgrade existing instances of SQL Server 2000 and 2005 to SQL Server 2008 by using best practices. These include preparation tasks, upgrade tasks, and post-upgrade tasks. It is intended to be a supplement to SQL Server 2008 Books Online.
