Searching Forums

  • Long time IT guy new to SQL Server BIDS. Took a great class from Brian Knight back in Dec, which is how I found this site. Forgive me if the answer is staring me in the face, but when I come to this site I have a tough time locating the appropriate forum category. For instance, I came out today looking for any conversation around using a package as a source for a report. I've exhausted Books Online and other available documentation, done what they've said, but am still having probs. So, I thought I'd come here to see if I could find my answer. I am greeted with a list of forums, but I see no sign of categories specific to Reporting Services. Using the top search box takes me out of the site out onto the web. Using the Search box in the lower right usually gives me zero results. What makes me think I 'm using this incorrectly is that I'll be staring at a topic listed to the left, e.g. "DDL Triggers", then I'll type "DDL Triggers" into the lower right search box and I still get zero results.

I don't want to clutter up the forums with unneccesary questions or redundant threads, but any help to get started would be helpful. I usually come here with very specific issues I'm trying to solve in the context of a pending deadline. I need to be able to easily drill to specific subject areas and topics. Again, if its there and I've missed it, then please accept my apologies and be kind enought to lay it out for me. Or, if I'm too much of a "Newbie" or don't fit the target profile of your site customer, let me know, but I suspect that is not the case. I hate being a bother, but I'd like to be able to tap into the collaborative and mentoring expertise of this site.

I'd be grateful for a reply.

  • I'll try to help. There is a Reporting Services group of forums pretty far down the list on the forums "Home" page (click "Forumns" in the list on the left side of the screen). Here's the link to it: http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Group416.aspx.

I use the search feature (the search box at the top right of each page) a lot to find what I want on the site and it always works pretty well, so I'm not sure why you get taken out of the site.

And don't worry about posting questions. There are plenty of people who are more than willing to help.

  • I also wouldn't worry about posting a question that may have already been answered somewhere else on SSC. You will either get a direct response to your question, or if they know where a similiar question has been asked, you'll be pointed to check out that other thread. Most of us will provide you with the link if we know it.

Even then, your situation may still be different and require additional assistance or changes to a solution.

  • Thanks to both of you. I went back out and looked again and sure enough there was the Reporting Services forum down below. So, I'm left with two possibilities a) someone slipped LSD into my coffee and it took awhile to wear off, or b) aliens.

As for the Search box up in the right, I mistakenly thought I was out of the site, but upon closer inspection, I noticed that all those links had 'sqlservercentral' as the domain. duuhhhh. However, I still am not quite sure how the Search is implemented because I opened up a random thread and searched on some unique words that I was staring at in that thread and did not get any results. Also, it looks to me like the Search box does not search on thread Titles?

I did, though, in general, get results on the search topic of "package". Anyway, I'm now off to the Reporting Services forum to search on using a package as a data source to a report. I'll try to see if anything is out there already before I post.

    Thank you for your help!
