Oh and one "sleeper" if you can find it: "Kung-Fu Hustle", this under-appreciated gem is IMHO one of the best comedies ever made.
Think "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", meets classic mythical tale, meets Looney Tunes at it's best. Of particular note is the cinematography and the choreography which are both the equal of any film made in the last ten years.

The two from 2008 that I saw and thought were notable were:
"007 Quantum of Solace"
-- as far as James Bond films go, I prefer Sean Connery; I I thought this was a good action flick.
"Hancock"
-- Will Smith always entertains. An interesting approach to a super hero movie.
If you are looking for some suggestions that are prior to 2008:
"Big Fish"
-- This is one of my all-time favorites.
"Hero"
-- This too is one of my all-time favorites.
If you are looking from some good classic movies you can't go wrong with an Alfred Hitchcock film or a Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall flick.

My wife and I have a subscription card at the cinema - we pay a monthly fee and can go as often as we like to just about any branch for no extra cost. My wife went 87 times last year, I went 81. So we should be able to recommend a few...So many to choose from...and my mind goes blank.
Wanted was good - but then so is just about every James McAvoy film.
My wife really enjoyed Australia - mainly because of Hugh Jackman.

I definitely agree with Juno, In Bruges and Burn after reading. The Dark Knight wasn't very special to me, but I seem to be one of the few. I have Slumdog Millionaire at home, but have to see it yet. The curious case of Benjamin Button just went into the cinema's over here, I heard that's gonna be a hit this year.
Some of my all time favourites are Happiness, Requiem of a dream, Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, Fargo and Big fish.

The Usual Suspects. I kicked myself for hours for not figuring out what happened before the I saw the end. The twist was incredible and well done. Another Kevin Spacey favorite for me is L.A. Confidential.
Kids might get a kick out of Big Trouble in Little China. Sure, its dated, but it is always good for a laugh.
I don't know if Little Miss Sunshine is right for kids but a good flick just the same. Ditto for Weekend At Bernie's and Fargo.
And while I wouldn't recommend these for kids, we own Saw 1-4. Pretty brutal so if that is your thing you won't be dissatisfied. And there is always House of Wax if you want to see Paris Hilton get murdered.

I'd agree with Wall-E, though wouldn't recommend Kung Fu Panda, (but I did enjoy watching it).
I only recommend movies that I enjoy watching. Take "No country For Old Men" or "There Will Be Blood", both incredibly well made movies, that turn out to be pointless depressing deconstructions. They're good movies but I cannot say that they are enjoyable to watch (mostly frustrating). Give me Kung-Fu Panda any day.

A movie not listed above but that I enjoyed this year was "A Good Year", no pun intended. It is a light comedy with Russell Crowe. A few moments that the kids need to cover their ears (language) 😉 .......

I watched "vantage point" the other day and was very impressed. also Batman, the dark knight was exceptional. though I do have to confess that my schedule has not left me with much time to catch many films this year. 🙁
have a good holiday and try to avoid any theatrical good luck (keep your legs in one piece!)
If w are including oldies...
The Incredibles is still a good family film, and I'm a softie for the princes bride, and the man with one red shoe
