3 Tips On Being A Rookie DBA

  • Comments posted to this topic are about the item 3 Tips On Being A Rookie DBA

  • .... Is English your first language? - There are just too many grammar errors in this post. Maybe things will improve with time.

  • "The ability to communicate is very important while dealing with a DBA position in a large corporation. It's even better when that communication is easily understood and the confirmation is a role in communication by both constitutes."

Sorry to be an old grouch (66 years old and still a DBA), but your argument becomes very weak when you don't follow your own advice. The article is a good illustration of your own point. You really do need to work on your own communication skills.

I do feel sorry for you in that this may be due what is going on in our educational institutions. My teacher friends report that they can no longer fail students - simply not allowed to. If they post failing grades, the grades are modified by others ( read that 'management', same difference ).

The tone of your article conveys that you may have a fairly long career ahead of you. Please use the time to hone your own skills also.

  • You really need to work on your spelling, grammar, and general communication skills.

  • What everyone else said. Please consider a "Grammar for Dummies" book. And good luck with that "No Heroes" policy.

  • "In my experiences, I've had the opportunity of working alongside some of the most greatest DBAs who have took advantage of their skills and talents to get through some of the hardest challenges,"

    huh.....?

Look -I'm sure you have vast knowledge and experience stemming from your long career in IT - and most of us are privileged to have you imparting some of this knowledge to us.

However your credibility as an expert gets shot to bits once people read posts like this - at least read through your article once or twice before posting it - or have someone proof read it for you before posting it. This is just a humble request.

P.S I have never been to America.

  • Isn't this an exact copy of the article by Craig Outcalt back in November 2008?

Plagiarism (with a plethora of grammar and spelling mistakes)!!

    Wow! You're not kidding!

What I thought was merely a horribly stated case for some decent concepts is really a horribly mangled retread!

  • freshprinceoflb, I hope your employer doesn't read this forum. You'd be royally screwed..... Plagiarism to its fullest extend..shame on you!!

I had to find myself reading, re-reading and again re-reading the sentences to figure out the point. But I guess we can't complain about Greg Bates' poor grammar since he did not write the content. Rather, shame on you Craig Outcalt for your horrible grammar.

Now I'm not going to claim to be an English Major. But I do try to do my best to make sense when I write an article.

Actually Craig has written a great article and articulated his points across very well.

It is, in fact, Greg Bates who made all these errors while trying to "reproduce" the article. Notice the change to Michelle from Jim in Tip #3!!

  • My apologies for this article. It was skimmed, but not thoroughly edited and it slipped by.

It also appears to be a copy of another article, so we have removed it from our system.

  • What the heck is going on here? Doesn't anybody check the article before it gets posted? It is hard to believe that anyone would allow a re-posting and plagiarism of an article that appeared only a few months ago. At least the original article seemed to make some sense.

  • Thanks salman.samad for correcting me. I only skimmed the original article briefly.

  • I am closing this thread. Please use the original article's thread if you have comments on the articles.

Again, my apologies that this one slipped through. I understand the complaints, but they do not belong in the discussion for Craig's article.
