Is it possible to have SSRS 2008 Reporting Services run with a SQL Server 2005 database back-end?

I don't see why not because it will just be a datasource like Oracle or other RDBMS so the only thing connecting both is a connection string.

Can a SQL Server 2005 database engine host the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB database for a SQL Server 2008 Reporting Service installation?

Yes - microsoft recommended our shop do it for a sharepoint plugin to work correctly.. tho we just decided to upgrade totally to 2008 sql tho 😀

Hi Patrick,

This configuration works fine, I've implemented it myself.

Prior to doing this I checked with Microsoft to confirm that this configuration was supported and they confirmed that it was.

No, it's definitely not possible to use an SSRS 2005 server with an SSRS 2008 ReportServer database.

The schema of the ReportServer 2005 databases is different to that of the ReportServer 2008 database.

Hi, I dont this is possible and it wouldnt make sense either. I have dealt with SSRS 2005 upgrades recently to 2008 R2 and the schema is different. I think i recall querying the sys.tables and there are an additional 4-5 tables, Plus there are additional views to extract data.

Report server 2008 may use 2005 SQL Engine for database hosting but it not should be express edition.
