scheduled backup strategies

  • I have my scheduled backups setup so that a full backup is done on a weekly basis and then on a daily or hourly basis, depending on the critical nature of the database in question, I do incremental backups to the same backup file. That backup file is also backed up to tape on a nightly basis and that gives me a lot of restore points I can use that are over a fairly long period. I believe that going too long between full backups just makes getting to a specific restore point more difficult, but having only full backups means a lot of storage overhead as well.

Use this article for what it is, a good starting point to get you thinking about what is possible with backups and start your research into developing your backup procedures for your specific case.
