What Version of Report Services Should I use

  • I work for a company developing software using mostly outdated tools. We have a few hundred customers running an application written in VS 2000 with crystal reports 9.0 reports.

I have just gotten to the point where I need to add reports to an application I wrote in VS2005 that sits on the same SQL Server 2000 database as another application we have that is written in VS2000. The reports from the other system are written in Crystal Reports 9.0.

I have been fooling around with creating SQL Server 2000 report services in vs2005 on the shared database but I am finding that most of the documentation and info on the net is about deploying reports to SQL Server 2005 Report Services.

We cannot easily ask some 200+ customers to upgrade to SQl Server 2005 and I don't know if the 100 or so crystal reports for the other application would even work anymore. We are a very small shop and an upgrade of the magnitude needed is beyond our current abilities.

I need to make a decision about what to develop and deploy the reports for my new application. Can I use SQL Server 2005 Report Designer and deploy the reports with a SQl Server 2000 database?. I guess not. Where can I get info on how to deploy the 2000 Report Services on our users systems? Some of our clients have the application and database on 1 machine and others share a network database. We are writing winforms .net applications not asp.

I loathe the idea of writing new reports in Crystal 9.0 but the learning curve for Report Services in 2000 seems daunting with all I have to do.

I am looking for opinions, suggestions any and all advice will be appreciated
