Neighboring counties

  • I need some data that lists neighboring counties.

Does anyone know of any 3rd party software that does this type of thing?

  • Are you talking about UK counties?

There are only 86 counties in the UK so it is probably quicker and cheaper to derive the data yourself. http://www.abcounties.co.uk/counties/map.htm

  • Although I'm from the UK, I'm talking about counties per state as in USA

  • You might look into a company called MapInfo. They have a lot of offerings for location-based info. I'm not sure they have what you need or not, but it could be worth a look.

  • an interesting idea; i've got databases that have a lat/longitude for each county, so you could calculate where nearby counties are < 40 miles or something; but that's not what you were after, right?

what happens if the county in question borders on another state? do you want all counties contiguous with that county, regardless of state, or just contiguous AND in that state?

this would be a project i'd throw at an intern to gather the data; it's kind of neat, although i don't know how it would be of value yet.

  • Go to http://www.census.gov, or americanfactfinder2 or visit esri.com for mapping resources. There are lots of data out there.
