Recommended SQL Server Training

  • I am a programmer who has been asked to serve in a backup SQL Server DBA role as well. My company is offering to provide training to help bring me up to speed. They would like me to research available training options. What are some training options that you folks have had good personal experience with and/or have heard good things about from co-workers? I saw some posts on other sites that were basically spammed by training providers. I'm not really so much interested in hearing their sales pitches, but am more curious to hear personal experiences from folks that have gone through the training. I have some knowledge of SQL already from my role as a programmer, and have begun performing some other basic tasks such as assigning permissions and running backups and restores, just to give an idea of where I am at.

  • Three options

    1. Cost saving for company (flexible too) --> Sites like Lynda, Pluralsight etc
    2. Recommended for depth or better overall exposure to DBA skills --> any instructor led class room training followed by an on demand online course like above
    3. Learn yourself by hiring a contractor and shadow him for a while. Learning on job (of course as long as its not critical production workload) is the best form of learning

  • I bought certification books and cheap computers, built myself a couple of fake servers and did my level best to break them. Best and cheapest job training I ever had. Basically I learned the right way to do things from the books, then went back and tried doing it the wrong way. If you can convince your company to give you a standalone sandbox server that you can build, break, rebuild, that would do you wonders for real experience. Especially if you can copy some scrubbed user databases over to mirror what your work environment is like.
