How Restore defunct filegroups from backup?

  Hello
  I have a sql server 2012 instance with a large database, it has 2 defunct file groups, which are not empty
  If i create a backup of the database and restore it, the defunct file groups are not being extracted and the database is not mounted since it complains about having missing files

  is there a way to extract those files from the backup?

  any other option?

  What are defunct filegroups? I'm not sure what you're doing or what the set up is currently.
