How to better manage my career

  • Its the start of 2019, I've decided to take Steve Jones admonition in one of his articles last month, to better manage my career. Over the Christmas/New Years holidays I took time off and thought about it a lot. I've realized that, for the most part, every position I've been in, for quite a while, I've basically gotten through what could best be described as a "want ad". Yeah, they may come to me via emails that I set up with search agents on companies websites, or using Indeed.com or similar, but really these are nothing more than an update to the old newspaper's want ad section.

I want to do my career management smarter this year. I've found that at least in my geographic area recruiters advertise primarily for short term contract positions. Sometimes they last a long time, but generally speaking they're only for a few months. So, over the holidays I've decided that working with recruiters from the likes of Robert Half, TEKsystems, etc., won't get me to where I want to go. Since I have very limited experience at this, the only other option I can come up with is cultivating professional relationships with recruiters at companies that I want to work for. Probably using LinkedIn for this. What I'm not sure about yet is how to find those recruiters. I'll try to find that out and am curious to know if others have had success finding recruiters on LinkedIn at the company(ies) you'd like to work at? I'd also like to know if you've come up with other approaches to better manage your career?

Kindest Regards, Rod Connect with me on LinkedIn.
