Help with ODBC Connection

  • I'm having trouble setting up an ODBC connection from Windows 10 to a 2008 R2 SQL server over a VPN.  We have a SQL Server 2008 R2 database running on a hosted Windows 2008 R2 server.  We connect through a Watchguard VPN.   For years, I have been able to use my MacBook to connect via ODBC using ODBC Manager and "Actual SQL driver".  It authenticates using windows authentication (domain\username).  There have been no problems with it.  Now, I wish to establish a connection to the database from a Windows 10 machine via VPN.  Mixed mode is enabled on the server and I added a specific user for this purpose and assigned permissions.  I can ping the ip of the SQL server just fine.  But when I try to create the connection it will not work.  It returns an error 11001, SQL Server not found.  Aside from using SQL authentication, none of the settings are different in the Windows ODBC connection vs. the Mac configuration.  I'm very much a newbie and looking for advice on troubleshooting....

    Thank you in advance.  Patrick
