bone mirroring questions.

  • I'm missing a bit of info in my understanding and would be very grateful for a pointer:

SQL 2008 Mirroring - no witness - High safety without auto failover (sync) operating mode.
I'm reading that in this mode, waiting for the ack back from the mirror to say the tran block has been hardened on the mirror can affect performance on the principal.  But I don't really understand how.  Let's say for the sake of argument that there is a good old latency, what impact does this have.  Is the user sitting there waiting for the ack for his tran to finish?  What happens when the mirror is down for 2 days?

I don't get how my network goes down between primary and dr but my apps carry on as normal.  They aren't waiting for days for an ack … or are there.

I'm confused.  Please note I'm not asking how to configure, just trying to understand.

How do I measure my transaction durations?  I'm interested in averages, means, medians.

    Thank you!
