Physical copy of datafiles and then restore it

  • Hi. My .mdf files are in disk E:. I want to restore database, which .mdf file is more than 1TB. But there isn't enough space and when admins add space, it says that disk is MBR and I cannot add space, I must convert it to GPT. My question is - can I copy all files to hard drive, format disk, change to GBP and then re-copy them to disk E: ? Are the databases will work after it? If I dont change structure, only copy and return files.

  • It should work without issues, just make sure you make a full backup of the database before, wouldn't be the first time a file gets corrupt while being copied to another media. Also make sure SQL Server has the same Folder / File Permissions afterwards.
