Native Client 10 connecting to SQL Server 2014 database

  • We are upgrading from SQL Server 2012 to 2014.  Our users have previously used the SQL Server Native Client 10 (NC 10) to make an ODBC connection to the SQL Server 2012 database.  But the Native Client 11 was newly available for SQL Server 2012.

Now that we are going to SS 2014, must I go to NC 11?  Or will NC 10 still work?  It seems to, but I don't see in any searching where NC 11 is "required" for SS 2014.

I'm sure that using NC 11 is "recommended", but will I have any issues using NC10 on SS 2014?

Often it will work to use 10.0 but I have seen some issues here and there and wouldn't rely on it. You are limited in terms of what is supported with older versions of the native client and can't use some of the current features for 2014.
Probably one of the biggest reasons 11.0 would be recommended is that 10.0 has an end of life in less than a year.  10.0 is already out of mainstream support.
