1st time using Azure

  • All, I just signed up Azure and created a new VM there. I made RDP connection to the server, created an inbound rule so I can allow users to connect to SQL Server from SSMS but I am getting an error. Just a generic error "Network related........" How do I allow users to connect through SSMS?

  • At this point you should be following normal remote connection troubleshooting. We’d also have to ask you a bunch more questions here.

So maybe do the normal troubleshooting and see if you can narrow it down.

They are not on the same network/different domain. Can that be an issue?

  • That’s how I define “remote access”. So that should not be a problem. There are some great troubleshooting blog posts out there for you to do some diagnostics and checking with.

They generally cover firewall settings, SQL Server config, credentials, etc.

You may have to set up the Azure connection to whitelist your (client) public range. That’s covered in the configuration of your VM. Ch conthat, too.

Have you tried using the troubleshooting for connectivity to Azure? I haven't tried it so I don't know if it's helpful or not but worth a shot. In the troubleshooting article for Azure connectivity, there is a link to the Troubleshooter for Azure SQL Database connectivity. Reading the article and checking that link might help:
