DB Schema Review for Performance Tuning

  • How helpful is it to review a db's schema as a way of tuning performance?  For example, let's say you have queries for reports that are running slowly.  You discover that, although the queries are pulling from a data warehouse, that data warehouse does NOT use a star or snowflake schema, resulting in lots of join?

Also, what is a good way to conduct a schema review in an organized and repeatable manner?
