Service pack install

  • Good day,

I have two instances A and B on my server therefore i need to apply a 2014 service pack 2  on B.Its my first time ,and i am not sure if this will ask for the server to be rebooted. The A instance is production and if we reboot, this will get bad.

Anyone with an idea if applying service pack will need to reboot the server or just  restart the service.

    Many thanks

  • If you are installaling a SP for SQL Server, the sql server service will restart.
    Kind regards,

  • There are circumstances under which the server will need to be rebooted.  As part of the installation wizard, you are invited to close any processes that would otherwise cause the server to have to be restarted.  Having said that, I've never noticed the server automatically reboot.  I think what happens is that next time you want to run a setup program of any sort, it will tell you there is a reboot pending and not allow you to go any further.  I don't know whether any functionality that the service pack introduces only becomes available after the reboot.

  • I have always found it good practice to reboot before and after i do maintenance on a server just to make sure the server comes back up probably old school thinking but always gives me peace of mind.
