DefaultLogin is set to Guest?

  • Experts, I was going through the registry to change the location of the backup file and I noticed that the default login is set to guest. What is it and what's the recommendation?

    That's normal. The guest account was used more years ago but is still used for some things with the system databases. The registry isn't where you would want to change this. The recommendations are to disable the guest account in user databases but leave it enabled in system databases.
    You can change the backup location in SSMS now - right click on the instance, select properties and go to Database settings. Default locations for data, log and backup files can be set on that page.

  • That's interesting. Hadn't seen it, but I see the same thing. I'm guessing this is a basic default, but since guest is not enabled by default, it shouldn't be an issue. If you have guest set to have CONNECT in a db, then any login can map to it.
