Questions about Upgrading SQL Server 2008 FCI to 2008R2

  • I have a two node cluster on Enterprise 2008 OS SP2 and  SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition SP4.  I am prepping to upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2 and want to know a few things.

    1.  Does the Upgrade Advisor requires a reboot once it is installed.  I am planning to install the upgrade advisor on the passive node.  I assume I then have to failover SQL Server to that node and then run the upgrade advisor.  Is that correct?
    2. Do I need to install the upgrade advisor on each node in the cluster and run it on each node or is running it on one node sufficient?
    3.  There is SSRS running in SharePoint Integrated Mode.  I've never used that and the SSRS service is in manual start mode and stopped.  Anything special I need to do there?

  • it wont matter for the Failover Cluster Instance, but for non cluster aware components such as SSRS and SSIS will need to be run on the node in question. Pretty sure UA does not require a reboot

Thanks Perry.  I missed this sentence on the page that describes using the upgrade advisor.  "If you are not scanning instances of Reporting Services, you can install Upgrade Advisor on any computer that can connect to your instance of SQL Server, and that meets the Upgrade Advisor prerequisites."  In my case SSRS is off so I installed the tool on my laptop. Once I got it installed, the in app documentation helped me know to supply either the SQL Cluster network name to scan the cluster aware parts or the node name for non-cluster aware portions, like SSRS and SSIS, and scan from my own computer.  And no restart was required post install of the upgrade advisor.
