About 15 years ago I was doing some work for a bank. They had a new employee who had come from an environment where '9' took you to the switchboard rather than giving you the more usual outside line. He dialled '9' - no operator and then '9' repeatedly. A few minutes later a couple of squad cars responded as they were on automatic response. The ground did not swallow him up although I think he wanted it to!
