MSDTC On Failover Cluster

  • Good Morning All,

    I have inherited a 2 node SQL Server 2008 Active/Passive Cluster.

Currently MSDTC is configured as a resource in the cluster -- however its not really configured for being usable. It has no network access.

A requirement has come up that now I need to start making some distributed transactions for archiving, ultimately to reduce the size of the DB so it can then be upgraded to SQL Server 2016.

What risks are there for me to reconfigure ths MSDTC, its currently running as the Network build in account -- Should I configure this to run as the SQL Service account or is that a bad idea?

I need to start distributed transactions FROM the Cluster to a standalone 2008 instance (and possibly a 2014 instance too).

Presumably MSDTC needs to be configured on both source and destination? Do they need the same configuration?

What dangers can anyone foresee with me making changes to the DTC, other than having to restart it (I've not checked resource dependencies in the cluster yet but am aware that could be a restart-risk)

    Cheers,
    Alex
