Hyper-V

    It was my understanding that Hyper-V is included with Windows Server 2008/2012/2016. What one of the Sys Admins just told me was just basic Hyper-V is included free but there is a cost for the Enterprise level of Hyper-V. Is there anyone out there that can provide more insight on this for me?

    I'd be interested in just what is defined as "enterprise Hyper-V."

    The "basic" free Hyper-V includes fail-over clustering (up to 16 nodes,) Live migrations of VMs within a cluster (2012+ only I believe.) I'm not sure what the maximum RAM etc supported is, and at the moment my Google-fu is weak and not finding that information either.

    Now, if he's talking about things like automatic migrations to balance the load across a cluster, then I believe that requires System Center Virtual Machine Manager, which is not "free" but is not part of Hyper-V.

    You may have hit the nail on the head. I will have to follow-up on this to be sure.
