Who Said This?

  • There's a quote I remember hearing a long time ago. It was said in response to the question: "What is the best way to catch a Nolan Ryan fastball?"

I have forgotten who said it. Do you know who said this?

"Get out of the way and let it hit the backstop. When it stops rolling, walk over and pick it up."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It was not about a Nolan Ryan fastball. It was Bob Uecker talking about the best way to catch a knuckleball.

  • Thanks, Ray!

With your help, I was able to find the actual quote on a few websites.

The way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until it stops rolling and then pick it up.

You've raised my curiosity. 🙂 What's this for?

  • Every now & again, someone comes to me with an overly risky solution to a relatively harmless problem. That's when I like to cite this quote. Thanks to you, I can now cite it correctly.

There are some problems that will resolve themselves. It's not always necessary to put ourselves in a hazardous position to solve the problem.

The ball will eventually stop rolling. We should get in the way only when we need to.
