Past experience 15+ years as DEV (small /medium/big energy companies ) and PROD (banks) as MS DBA.
At new place am working as consultant.
I currently cutoff from day to day DBA task (all dba tasks automated and managed by tools/junior dba support team),I placed in team working on automation using PowerShell with WMI and SMO.
In past , after working hours, at home I always learn new DB technologies and most importantly had chance to implement then at place I used to work (for company benefits and keeping my skills up to date)
Suddenly I found myself in vacuum.
I can learn/code/practice PowerShell for SQL server and that it.
Based on past experience (my personal) I know that I could spend a lot of personal time learning new technologies but without practical/real time cases and day to day practice ,this knowledge is useless and soon forgotten (in my case it is Sybase, Cassandra, Hadoop-Hive, Word Press, HTML, Linux)
Based on current situation I am trying to create 8 month plan to advance in carrier as consultant by
Continue with mastering PowerShell on day job and running home projects with PowerShell or other MS technologies
Few projects come in mind
1.Using PowerShell collect data from web / process/parse and store it database in MS Cloud and create some sort of online service(hire freelancer to build web service) allowing users access data for free or by $ subscription
Pro: knowledge of PowerShell will not be lost, will learn about MS Cloud and might get some $ from online service
Cons: I did not see any consultant positions for MSDBA working with Cloud
2. Forget about using PowerShell at home and learn MS flavor of Hadoop
Pro: new technologies , subjects is very interesting
Cons: Could not find any practical case of using this technologies in real life (project that I could be put on my resume), did not see any consulting positions for MS Hadoop in our region.
I am active in sports like snowboarding and white water or hiking , but fell discomfort while not working/learning new technologies at home during night hours(you don't learn much new while watching TV series).
If you had similar experience with managing you time/carrier and working on home projects that
helped you improve you DBA skills I would really appreciate you critics of my plans or any other suggestions.
Thank you
