Subscription Email Issues

  • Rather new to Reporting Services and I have been chasing this issue for a while, so hope perhaps someone can assist a bit.

First, the basic mechanics; SQL 2008 Report server (Updated to latest patches, etc.), dual quad Xeon processors, 24gb Ram, dual 500GB Raid drives (C: & D:) Report server and relevant files exist on D:, OS and swap on C:. SQL Report Server resides in domain A but services reports and subscriptions from Domain A and B users. A windows (Server 2008 R2) Trust is in place between domains A & B. Both domains have Exchange servers, with relay allowed for SSRS.

Data analyst in Domain B creates a timed subscription that runs daily and emails users from both Domains. The subscription will work for weeks and then suddenly will fail, "Failure sending email: The user or group name XXXX\XXXXXX is not recognized. Mail will not be resent." The subscription owner can, at the time of this failure, run reports, manually remote to and gain authorized login/access to the server, create new reports/subscriptions and connect SQL management studio to server from their PC desktop. All logging shows only the error above.

This only happens to analysts in Domain B and not to analysts in Domain A. At the time of issue, domain trust is active and can be validated between domains. Cross domain authentication (AD. LDAP, Etc.) is functioning as expected. All domain server logs show no security failures. Analysts in both domains can connect and authenticate to servers in the opposite domain. All linked servers, stored procedures etc. also work when this is occurring.

We have not found a way to correct the issue manually. Rebooting the Reporting server does not clear it, nor does restarting both domain AD servers, at the same time as Report server, or without Report server, for that matter. Eventually the subscription starts functioning again. Physical network does not experience any loss or latency during this period. We have not found an activity, service or function within the domain or network that correlates to these failures. Changing the email server being relayed against or used for mail does not correct the issue either. Changing the service account(s) that SSRS runs on/with does not change anything either.

Based on all the proceeding, I am guessing that the issue is somehow internal to SQL or SSRS itself? I am at a loss as to how to further diagnose or track this. Does anyone have any thoughts or ever seen this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
