SSMS 2012 Database Connection Dialog Hangs

  • I have several users with an unusual problem with SSMS 2012. When they attempt to connect to a database using the "Connect to Server" dialog box, the connection just hangs. Sometimes after about 15 minutes the connection will be successful. Other attempts simply spin seemingly endlessly. Users experiencing this issue are both running SSMS 2012 on Win 7 Pro (64 bit). The following troubleshooting steps have been tried:

    1. When the user runs SSMS "As Administrator" the connections work almost instantly. (Elevating privileges is not a solution in our environment)

    2. Wireshark shows that SSMS does not try to hit the SQL server when the user experiencing this issue clicks connect.

    3. I can create a new virgin user on the PC and that login experiences the same problem.

    4. A complete rip and re-install of SSMS 2012 does not resolve the issue.

Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?

According to me clearing all your MRU history is the best solution as I have tried it, it worked for me.

    1. All you have to do is go on SSMS 2012 and close all instance already opened.

    2. Go to Explorer, open "data_name\Microsoft\SQL Server Management Studio"

    3. Rename the folder to something else.

    4. Now go on SSMS 2012 and open it.

So by doing this you will see that all your MRU history is cleared just enter your username and password and use SSMS. I hope this will work.Feel free to ask.

    Regards

  • We tried his fix and it does solve the problem for a single attachment for only one of my users and then SMSS reverts to this same puzzling behavior.

Are there any more thoughts about this issue out there?

  • I don't have any idea why this is happening, but I would personally fire up Process Monitor

    from https://live.sysinternals.com/tools

Filter it down to SSMS and see what is happening.

The other troubleshooting you could try (which will be easier than Procmon) is to enable the SSMS log by launching it with the /log switch.

  • Has anyone found a solution to this. This is now happening to me and a few other people at my office, but not to everyone? Can someone please point me in the right direction to resolving this. Elevated privileges (Admin rights) allows instant connection, but without that, the connect to server just hangs, sometimes connecting after approx 10-15 mins.

    Thanks in advance!

This worked for me just now, how long does it take for the behavior to return?

It's happening for all workstations in your environment?

  • It is not for all workstations. Some work normally, but a few are having this issues.

  • The solution that cathrinegarcia24 referenced with clearing the MRU worked for me.

  • This solution did not work for us, and that is why I am posting again... I have renamed folders and such, but still no luck.

  • I was having the same problem.  This may occur on a machine that has OR had VMWare Horizon View Client.
    In
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Kernel\ObUnsecureGlobalNames
    add

    netfxcustomperfcounters.1.0

to whatever else is in the data window.
    Reboot
    and everything works fine.

    good luck
