Performance tuning classes?

  • Can someone tell me the best place to go n learn Performance Tuning? I know there are ways to learn (books, blogs), but the company I work for is paying for the class, so I thought why not take advantage and learn something. I have seen 5 days classes with labs but haven't seen 1 which mainly focuses on Tuning, troubleshooting etc.

He who learns only to accumulate wealth, dies an atheist. And he who learns for the sake of action, dies a mystic."[/i]

  • I'm putting on a full day of query tuning at Connections in September and at the PASS Summit in November. The advantage of going to either of these is that you also have the rest of the conference sessions to collect additional information and details.

So, you're employer isn't likely to spring for a trip to Belgium then. Oh well. There's still Connections and PASS Summit.

Well we do have an open door policy and I can ask my manager anything I want, but sometimes I don't like the way he looks at me when I ask him these kind of questions like "I am thinking of going to Belgium and I need to know if the company will pay for it".:-)

I think I will try Brent Ozar. He offers courses which mainly focus on Performance.

He has some good stuff and is based right there in Chicago anyway. That helps.

SQLSkills does a lot of performance tuning training in Chicago too.

You couldn't really go wrong with some of these people.

I'd say if you were traveling to a SQL Saturday, I do precons at a bunch of those where we focus on performance.

  • Books should be more valuable than classes. Look for titles by Kalen Delaney particularly. For general SQL skills, look for Itzik Ben-Gan.

Depends on the classes, and on the books 😉
