  • As a consultant I see our role is to advise our clients towards the solution that is best for them. Not only technically but also culturally. This can only be achieved by having an understanding of the breadth of options available and taking into consideration their particular abilities, requirements and concerns.

It sounds like that is exactly what Scott is doing.

  • I'm afraid meteorological wisecracks are the limit of my interest for now - not because I wouldn't use AWS or anything but just because there's enough on my plate learning wise. Hope to let others pave the way at our shop!

I thought it more a literary wisecrack 🙂

  • Thanks for the comments. Yes it was a literary wisecrack but I have mentioned cloud storage to some supposedly "IT people" not just clients and have received blank looks. Technology, not just in the SQL/Database area, is forever changing and whilst I am a fan of change if it is for the good, sometimes just the sheer pace of it can be a drag, just to even keep up!

Totally agree. The older I get the more it is harder to keep up with the ever widening breadth of knowledge required...so how do I maintain depth of knowledge as well? How does anyone?

I still struggle to believe that some people are so unaware of what is happening in their industry. Supposedly the same thing occurs in medical general practice. Fortunately there are two excellent GPs at my local surgery. Bearing in mid that there is such a thing as half-life of knowledge which should make us all keep on our toes.

  • As a fellow consultant, I feel it is our duty to present the options. Perhaps advocate strongly for one, but only in as much as it is what the client needs, not what we want to do. In this regard we are shoulder to shoulder. Nice to hear from consultants who think this way. Too many consultants advocate for what they want, or at least that is the appearance.

Love the literary comment (though I would not have "gotten" it without the references from the more learned, and a Google assist).

Ok, I give up. What WAS the literary comment?

Ah... It's in the title! I thought it was in the comments. And here I was reading and re-reading and re-reading the comments looking for some esoteric allusion....

  • Hey David, you weren't the only one who couldn't find it. I also re-read the comments a few times.:-)

  • Glad I created some more discussion. 😀

As an aside I got married at the Church were old Wordsworth is buried.
