Logging into SSRS with NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE instead of Windows Authenticated User

  • We recently had to recreate our development server, however, we were able to recover the ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB databases. We reinstalled Reporting Services and then replaced the newly created databases with the backup databases. All seemed to be working great to that point.

    However, when we try to browse the Reporting Services website, there are no reports. We have been able to change the URL to get to the My Reports folder but when we create a new folder here the Modified By shows NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE instead of the Windows Authenticated user that we are logged in as. This makes us think that we have an IIS issue but we have set up IIS exactly like our production server is.

    To further complicate things, we change the URL to browse to a folder but we receive this error "The permissions granted to user <Windows Authenticated User that is logged on> are insufficient for performing this operation." This seems to contradict what happened in the My Reports folder.

    Any ideas?

  • my guess would be you need to recover the rsreportserver.config file too

  • I was able to restore the rsreportserver.config file but this didn't help anything.

  • I'm still struggling with this issue. I have found a number of placing that talk about moving Reporting Services from one computer to another. However, all of these articles talk about making a backup of the encryption key from Reporting Services Configuration Manager and since our server is no longer available there is no way for me to make a backup of the encryption key. I'm not 100% sure that this is my issue.

    If this is the issue, I would think that I'd need to somehow either get this key somehow or to remove the encrypted data. Any thoughts on either of these ideas? Or am I heading down the wrong path?:w00t:

  • OK, I think I finally got this running again! 😀

    After my last post I went to the ReportServer DB and noticed that I had one record in the Keys table for the server that Report Server is running on. I thought that this might be the key from the old server so I deleted it. As soon as I deleted this and restarted both IIS and Reporting Services service, everything just worked!

    Hopefully this may help someone else that runs into this situation down the road.
