Suggested order of learning for Stairways

  • Hi! I'm a newbie to both the SQL world as well as the SSC world, and I was interested in using your Stairways as a learning tool. My problem, however, is that my colleagues all have differing opinions on what order to complete the Stairways. My question: Is there a preferred or recommended order to completing the Stairways? If so, perhaps there should be some sort of guidance in place (perhaps numbering or arrows leading from one Stairway to the next) to help the novice user.

  • I would suggest that you start with Stairway to Data, continue with Database Design to understand SQL objects, then T-SQL DML and continue with whatever you're interested as the topics are independent from each other, it all depends on what path you want to follow.

Are you seriously taking the advice and code from someone from the internet without testing it? Do you at least understand it? Or can it easily kill your server?

  • The Stairway Series aren't meant for you to necessarily work through them all. They aren't designed as a course for all of SQL Server.

They are designed to get you up to speed in a particular area. So if you want to learn about T-SQL, we have two.

    Stairway to T-SQL DML (Beginner)

Stairway to T-SQL: Beyond the Basics (Intermediate)

That doesn't necessarily come before or after the Stairway to SSIS, or Stairway to SSRS or Stairway to Data.

Choose the items in the areas that matter to you.
