Installer for SQLDOM.msi?

  • I just got my Dev 2012 edition and when I checked the prereqs, it said I needed to download and install SQLDOM.msi. So I downloaded it, but when I try to install it, it tells me Windows Installer is not the right program to install it.

This confuses me. If Windows Installer isn't the needed program, what is? (I'm on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, btw).

    Any ideas?

  • What is the exact error message?

  • Huh. This time I'm getting a different error than I did the first time. The first time was something like "Windows Installer is not the right installer for this program," but I can't remember the exact verbage.

This time I got "This installation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor."

Odd... I wonder what's going on... I did have a Windows Update between the two attempts. I wonder if that's the reason the error message changed.

  • I redownloaded the package and it seems (cross fingers) to be working this time. So maybe I hit the wrong one when I clicked download the first time.

    Thanks, Sean.

  • Looking at microsoft's site, that is a feature pack.

    Check this out.

So if anything, I would install afterwards.

Was it giving you a warning during installation of Dev Edition?

Or was it just something you read?

When I went to install the Upgrade Advisor, it told me I needed SQLDOM. When I went to install SQLDOM, it told me that Windows Installer was the wrong program for install.

But yesterday I did catch up on my Windows Updates and noticed two updates that fixed issues with the Windows Installer. I didn't think anything of it because the KB articles didn't reference SQL Server at all, but I installed them anyway. So now I wonder if I was getting the wrong message from the installer because of whatever issue MS fixed.

  • GAH. I hate the Upgrade Advisor.

Analysis Complete. 4 Total. 3 Successes. 1 Warning.

The warning is the first action (Analyze SQL Server) and it makes me go to a report that says "Everything's fine. We're all good. No worries here."

Why oh why does a warning generate if nothing is wrong? headdesk.

  • When you run upgrade advisor, a young programmer has activated your web cam, and is streaming the video to his computer. Based on your reaction, there could be either a chuckle, or a spew on monitor moment.

Glad you are making progress. Just imagine the headache for some companies, with multiple windows versions, and Windows Installer.

Really? That explains the coffee leaking through the sides of the webcam. I never knew... @=)

If they were a better programmer, Mt Dew might be the liquid.

Never had my webcam leaking, so I must not be reacting enough.

Something I guess I need to work on.

  • This is interesting. To install BOL, one has to go into the Help menu (Manage Help Settings) and choose from a whole bunch of different documents to download and install locally.

This is a bit of a pain, and yet oddly intriguing at the same time.
