Office 365 / Citrix

  • We are evaluating options for replacing a dated software and hardware infrastructure, all hosted on-premises. There are around 75 users, most remote via Citrix.

Our consultant has repeatedly recommended moving to Exchange Online. I ran numbers and the 5-year cost is about the same, so that would be a technical decision. Is there a good, preferably non-Microsoft, comparison of Exchange Online vs. on-premises? Our needs aren't particularly elaborate, though we do have some applications that hit Exchange and they need to keep working.

I am also looking at Office 365 Midsize Business. We publish Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint and a few other apps. Office 365 would replace most of them, but we would still need Citrix indefinitely for our LOB software. I've been asked how these applications would get access to our network, particularly storage, and my guess is a VPN. Is there a better/cheaper technology? Has anyone replaced Citrix with a cloud solution? How did it go? My main concern is security, not so much hacking as our own users, who continually trash their PCs with malware. Also, we have an exceptionally deep, detailed, and carefully restricted file structure mandated by the person who signs the checks; he is not changing.

    Thanks.
