Scale-Out SSRS Deployment: Is Joining Necessary?

  • I'm working on significant upgrades to our SSRS environment where we will have multiple SSRS nodes behind a load balancer, and they all will connect to a single database.

I know the SSRS Configuration Manager provides the ability to join the SSRS nodes together, presumably so they are aware of each other?

I'm wondering if I really need to do this or not, and haven't been able to find much documentation for if it's required. Is there any advantage to joining them together? Does joining them together mean I won't be able to remove servers from the load balancer one-at-a-time for patching purposes?

If anyone has tips or links to relevant material, I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!
